Escaping Criticism, Oil on Canvas, 30 x 24 (76.2 x 60.96cm), 2005. Although the canvas Escaping Criticism originally began as a whimsical and fun exercise in the trompe l'oeil manner, it also asks the question, "What is all this fuss over art, anyway?" Is art taken too seriously? The painting becomes a parody; it is making fun of itself. I sometimes think many artists take their work too seriously, myself included. This led me to create this canvas. Having canvases strewn about the studio, which are simple commonplace objects found in many painter studios, and interacting with them on a daily routine became the thought basis for this painting. The temptation then became too great to turn a canvas around to paint the other side of it.
